A place before a house
Akri House sits on the southwestern edge of Antiparos, above the bay at Agios Georgios. This page is about the land, not the building.
01 — The sea
To the northwest the Aegean is wide and unbroken, dark blue and rarely still. On clear days the neighbouring islands appear as thin grey lines on the horizon.
02 — The wind
The meltemi arrives from the north and gives the summer its rhythm. Every outdoor room here has to be planned around where the wind is, and where it is not.
03 — The rock
Pale layered stone breaks through thyme and low scrub. It sets the levels of the site long before anyone draws a floor.
04 — The light
Mornings are sharp and white. Late afternoon turns everything sand-coloured, and the last light stays in the west long after the bay has gone quiet.
05 — The bay
South of the site the water turns shallow and turquoise. Small boats, a few white houses and a slower kind of day.
